The Dane County Area Automotive Technician Youth Apprenticeship offers students training in
First year students from area school districts attend classroom training at McFarland High School on Wednesday evening from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Students from Madison Metropolitan (Memorial High School) and Oregon School districts remain in their school to receive the same training as those attending McFarland High School. All students who continue the program for a second year will continue taking their courses at Madison Area Technical College. The second year courses run Monday and Wednesday evening from 6:00-9:00 p.m. and courses are taught by technical college staff.
Two-year students are also eligible for participation in the Automotive Youth Education System (AYES). This programs runs very similarly to the two-year youth apprenticeship program, however adds an additional credential if completed successfully.

Students are encouraged to take Automotive related courses within their local high school previous to participation in Automotive Technician YA

All students are encouraged to successfully complete at least one job shadow previous to enrollment in YA
One-year students (seniors) who meet all program requirements will receive
Program Requirements for one-year students:

450 hrs. work-based on-the-job training in the areas of engine performance, brakes, electrical, and suspension steering

Competency checklist must be completed as required by the Youth Apprenticeship Program and MATC. (see level 1 requirements)

Grading of C or better in all related classroom courses

Successful completion of ASE test of one or more of the following; brakes, suspension and steering, electrical, and/or engine performance is required for those seeking MATC credit in one or more of these courses.
The YAP/AYES program is a partnership between the Dane County School Consortium and Madison Area Technical College.
