About the Finance YA Program

 

The Dane County Area Finance Youth Apprenticeship program is available during a student’s junior or senior year.  Interested students should apply during the second semester of their sophomore or junior year.  When the school-based and work-based requirements are met for either the one- or two-year programs, the students receive a Certificate of Occupational Proficiency from the Department of Workforce Development.

Prerequisite

  • On track for high school graduation
  • Career exploration of Accounting or Financial pathways
  • All students are encouraged to successfully complete at least one job shadow previous to enrollment in YA

Course Information

 

Some courses may be taken at the local high school, training site, Madison College or online. 

 

Recommended courses include:

  • Accounting I and II
  • Marketing
  • Personal Finance

Worksite

The Dane County office will offer students assistance in finding a position, however further support may be needed from local school district personnel, parent/guardian, and from the student.  Students must plan on having release time during their school day to participate in the program.

 

To receive the State Certificate students must complete;

  • 450 hours of work experience is required to earn a one-year certificate
  • 900 hours of work experience is required to earn a two-year certificate.

The Finance YA curriculum is aligned with the National States’ Career Cluster Standards Knowledge and Skill statements. It is also endorsed by the following groups:

  • Wisconsin Bankers Association
  • Wisconsin Credit Union League
  • State of Wisconsin Office of the Commissioner or Insurance
