Standard 08 – Equipment

Equipment and tools used in the automobile technician training program must be of the type and quality found in the repair industry and must also be the type needed to provide training to meet the program goals and objectives.

Standard 8.1 – SAFETY

Documents to collect include the following:

Safety guards and shields are used.  The students are required to wear safety glasses at all times while working in the lab/shop area.

B. Do all students, instructors, and visitors wear safety glasses in the lab/shop area while lab is in session?  The evaluation team will conduct a visual inspection.

Safety glasses are required for all students, staff and visitors any time that lab activities are taking place in the shop.  Signs are posted on the doors, a written policy is provided to the students, and visitor safety glasses are available from instructors.

Standard 8.2 – QUANITY AND QUALITY

Documents to collect include the following:

A. The evaluation team will conduct a visual inspection of the tools and equipment needed for instruction.

B. The evaluation team will conduct a visual inspection of class size and inventory.

C. The evaluation team will conduct a visual inspection tools and equipment used to meet industry quality standards.

A. Rate the availability of the tools and equipment needed for instruction in the lab/shop area. The evaluation team will conduct a visual inspection of the tools and equipment needed for instruction.

B. Rate the quantity of tools and equipment in terms of the quantity needed for efficient and effective instruction. The evaluation team will conduct a visual inspection of class size and inventory.

C. Rate the tools and equipment used in terms of meeting industry quality standards. The evaluation team will conduct a visual inspection tools and equipment used to meet industry quality standards.

Standard 8.3 – CONSUMABLE SUPPLIES

Documents to collect include the following:

A. The evaluation team will conduct a visual inspection. Provide inventory sheets and describe replenishment procedure.

A. Rate the consumable supplies in terms of availability to assure continuous instruction. The evaluation team will conduct a visual inspection.

Consumable supplies such as fasteners, fuses, lubricants and cleaning supplies are stocked in the lab.  A tour of this area will reveal the availability of consumable supplies.

Standard 8.4 – PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

Documents to collect include the following:

A. Provide a copy of the preventive maintenance schedule or spreadsheet.

A. Rate the use of a preventive maintenance schedule to minimize equipment down time.  

 

Standard 8.5 – REPLACEMENT

Documents to collect include the following:

A. Describe the annual review process and provide ane xample from the annual survey data and Advisory Committee minutes with pertinent information highlighted.

Tools and equipment are repaired and replaced as they become obsolete, break, or wear out.

Standard 8.6 – TOOL INVENTORY AND REPLACEMENT

Documents to collect include the following:

A. Provide the inventory list and describe how the tools are disbursed or signed in/out to students

Instructors are required to have an inventory process in place.

Standard 8.7 – PARTS PURCHASING

Documents to collect include the following:

A.  If purchase parts, provide a written procedure or parts request form.

B. ETL may discuss this issue with the instructor.

Standard 8.8 – HAND TOOLS

Documents to collect include the following:

A. Provide aninventory. The evaluation team will conduct a visual inspection.

B. Explain policy and provide information available for students detailing recommended tool list and vendor visits.

A. Rate the availability of hand tools for students’ use during lab/shop instruction, comparable to the tools that will be required for employment. Provide aninventory. The evaluation team will conduct a visual inspection.

Each instructor is involved with encouraging students to purchase tools as they become more involved in the high school training program.

B. Rate the emphasis placed on encouraging students to purchase a hand tool set (during the period of instruction) which is appropriate to the level in which they are being trained. Explain policy and provide information available for students detailing recommended tool list and vendor visits.

Students are asked not to purchase tools within the first year of participation of the program.  During the second year of the program students are provided information on acquiring tools through the AYES program and their employer.
