    The Biotechnology Program is a partnership between the Dane County School Consortium and the Biopharmaceutical Technology Center Institute (BTCI). The program offers high school juniors and seniors an intensive work and technical training experience in the biotechnology field. Students will work in bioscience/biotechnology settings. The program offers high school juniors and seniors an intensive work and technical training experience in the biotechnology field. Students will work in bioscience/biotechnology settings. There they will acquire basic skills pertinent to lab work and techniques in the first year along with the core employability and safety skills. In the second year, students will further develop testing skills and become proficient in a variety of bioscience tests and applications dependent on their worksite setting. I loved learning to operate a wide variety science machines, completing state of the art syntheses and assays, and serving the UW Madision biotech research commons. How did YA influence your plans after high school? I was burned out on biotech after my apprenticeship and decided to study computer engineering instead. I eventually got the opportunity to bring the ends together, designing specialized computers for the sciences. What do you want others to know about YA? Actually doing the job will teach you things you didn't expect to learn and answer important questions you wouldn't have asked. The YA program gets you into the arena to struggle with real industrial problems and emerge stronger.

    UW Madison Department of Entamology Sydney Schumacher Waunakee Class Of 2022 Company: UW Madison Department of Entamology Program: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) What did you love about YA? I loved my lab members and felt like a valued part of the team. Being a part of a research team was a very valuable experience for me and I learned that research was my passion. I also really enjoyed being able to learn new things every day and gain invaluable skills. I was able to travel and do field work, which I found I really enjoyed. How did YA influence your plans after high school? The YA program gave me an advanced skill set that set me apart from other students. It also affirmed my interest in research, ecology, and genetics. My sophomore year of high school I got an internship in a genetics lab because of my experience and now work at the lab. This summer I will be interning for NOAA in Miami. What do you want others to know about YA? The experience you gain from this opportunity is invaluable and will set you up for the rest of your career. The class that you take as a part of YAP gives you valuable skills that will help you in your internship and career. The students, teachers, coworkers, and mentors are supportive and kind.

    Meriter Jaymi (Andreas) Bohat Waunakee Class Of 2004 Company: Meriter Program: Health Science What did you love about YA? In the Youth Apprenticeship Program, I was able to explore many different healthcare related careers. I obtained certification as a nursing assistant, Health Unit Coordinator, Phlebotomist, and basic lab tech skills. I mostly enjoyed having the opportunity to experience each of these positions, and ultimately get an understanding of healthcare systems and available areas of employment. How did YA influence your plans after high school? While in the Youth Apprenticeship program, I was hired by Meriter as a CNA. After I graduated, I remained employed with Meriter for another 8 years. I was able to use my experience from the Youth Apprenticeship program to move into different roles at Meriter and obtain promotions! What do you want others to know about YA? It is an amazing opportunity to experience employment opportunities post high school. It allows students to get hands on experience in an area before committing to a major in college or area of work after high school!
