  • Vet Tech | Danecountyconsortium

Veterinary Technician Back to all programs Choosing a career as a veterinary technician means caring for all kinds of creatures, from poodles to platypuses. By combining your love of animals with what you do for a living, you not only have a positive impact on the lives of animals, you enrich the quality of your own life as well. According to the US Department of Labor, the demand for Veterinary Technicians is expected to grow 36% over the next several years, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. Earn college-level credit along with gaining work experience valuable to your future career in this area. Plan on release time from school during the second semester to go on the job site. Receive the state certificate students when you complete 450 hours of work-based learning. (The classroom training does not count toward these hours.) STUDENT TESTIMONIAL “I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of the Youth Apprenticeship Program. It has given me the opportunity to participate in many things that many students do not get to experience in a classroom. The hands-on experiences with veterinary technicians and veterinarians have taught me so much about the field of veterinary science. Each and every day I have learned something new like proper surgery sanitation, proper handling of different animals, how to interact with clients, and much much more. By obtaining this knowledge early on in my education, I now have a head start in many of my animal science classes I plan on taking at the UW Platteville.“ Emma Skrepenski, Class of 2019, Sun Prairie

  • Alumni Profiles | Danecountyconsortium

YA Alumni SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH Trevor Thomas Waunakee Class Of 2011 Company: Ketter Komputers Program: Information Technology What did you love about YA? My experience was very special, as I was able to work for a small business owned by a former YA! I really enjoyed having access to real world situations that equipped me with skills I wouldn't have had until later in my career. I loved working in the computer shop and going out to customers and solving their technology problems. How did YA influence your plans after high school? Before I entered YA, I wasn’t certain on my post high school path. The skills and experiences I gained through the program inspired me to start my own business after high school. After a few years I owned multiple companies and was continuing to grow. I would eventually make a profitable exit from those businesses, and transition back into employment to continue developing and gaining new skills. Today I am the District Sales Manager for an industrial manufacturing company and am responsible for the midwestern United States. Had I not entered the program and been afforded the opportunity to start a career while in high school, I might still be experimenting to find what I enjoy and what works for me. What do you want others to know about YA? You never want to stop learning. One of the greatest things about the YA program is it gives you access to knowledge and experiences that are otherwise typically off limits to students. In some ways it's like a trial or sneak peek into a career. This program allowed me to better understand what I enjoyed about the working world, how to be successful in the office and not just the classroom, and was an excellent foundation for my entire career!
