  • Ryan Prior

Ryan Prior Oregon Class Of 2006 Company: UW Biotechnology Center Core Peptide Synthesis Lab Program: STEM What did you love about YA? I loved learning to operate a wide variety science machines, completing state of the art syntheses and assays, and serving the UW Madision biotech research commons. How did YA influence your plans after high school? I was burned out on biotech after my apprenticeship and decided to study computer engineering instead. I eventually got the opportunity to bring the ends together, designing specialized computers for the sciences. What do you want others to know about YA? Actually doing the job will teach you things you didn't expect to learn and answer important questions you wouldn't have asked. The YA program gets you into the arena to struggle with real industrial problems and emerge stronger.

  • Casper Vang

Casper Vang DeForest Class Of 2018 Company: Hometown Pharmacy Program: Health Science What did you love about YA? During my time as an apprentice I worked for a local pharmacy. Some of my daily duties included filling out patient prescriptions, contacting insurance, and working the cash register at the drive through. I worked closely with the head pharmacist and other pharmacy technicians. How did YA influence your plans after high school? One of my most memorable experiences was learning under Bob Vernig alongside my small group of upcoming pharmacy techs. We would meet at the elementary school each week in Monona Grove and sit in those small classrooms. Bob taught us a lot of knowledge and prepared us to take the test for our licenses. My peers were also a very outgoing group and we had a lot of fun working together, and sharing our experiences from our workplaces. What do you want others to know about YA? Having a mentor greatly benefitted my experience because they were a role model that I could aspire to be like. In addition, they helped guide me to learn more about myself and what kind of career path I want to choose.

  • Trevor Thomas

Trevor Thomas Waunakee Class Of 2011 Company: Ketter Komputers Program: Information Technology What did you love about YA? My experience was very special, as I was able to work for a small business owned by a former YA! I really enjoyed having access to real world situations that equipped me with skills I wouldn't have had until later in my career. I loved working in the computer shop and going out to customers and solving their technology problems. How did YA influence your plans after high school? Before I entered YA, I wasn’t certain on my post high school path. The skills and experiences I gained through the program inspired me to start my own business after high school. After a few years I owned multiple companies and was continuing to grow. I would eventually make a profitable exit from those businesses, and transition back into employment to continue developing and gaining new skills. Today I am the District Sales Manager for an industrial manufacturing company and am responsible for the midwestern United States. Had I not entered the program and been afforded the opportunity to start a career while in high school, I might still be experimenting to find what I enjoy and what works for me. What do you want others to know about YA? You never want to stop learning. One of the greatest things about the YA program is it gives you access to knowledge and experiences that are otherwise typically off limits to students. In some ways it's like a trial or sneak peek into a career. This program allowed me to better understand what I enjoyed about the working world, how to be successful in the office and not just the classroom, and was an excellent foundation for my entire career!

  • Abigail Spilde

Abigail Spilde Monona Grove Class Of 2022 Company: Supreme Structures Program: Architecture, Construction What did you love about YA? I really enjoyed being able to learn and grow my understanding of construction on an entirely new level. Networking with new companies every day and seeing them being stunned to see a young woman in construction who is in High School really impressed them. Personally coming from a hands-on learner I highly recommend the YA program, being able to learn not only in the classroom but also on the job site. During my apprenticeship, I really enjoyed being able to go to work everyday before school and get in on the morning action before heading off to my actual school. In the construction world work starts early, luckily I was able to have an early release from my actual classes. My everyday schedule looked like getting up at 5:30 and leaving for work around 6 and reporting to the jobsite location which varied and work until 10 and then go to Monona Grove for school till 3:30 and complete the credits I needed to graduate. How did YA influence your plans after high school? After my experience in the Youth Apprenticeship program it changed ALL my plans. I decided to go to a 4 year university, (University of Wisconsin Platteville) for my bachelors in Construction Management with an emphasis in Construction Safety also two minors in Architecture and Business. After having the opportunity to be working in the real world I knew I could do better and become a project manager for a residential or commercial company. Later eventually creating my own design build residential company. After those years of my life I would like to return to UWP and be a professor and teach all my experiences to a new generation of students. What do you want others to know about YA? Oh absolutely! I believe everyone should do it. It's a wonderful program for all to experience what you think you want to do. It saves money and time to understand what you like to do while you still have a little time left in High School. Many didnt know what they wanted to do but I knew what field I wanted to be into which was construction but what kind? With the YA opportunity I was able to explore the commercial side with a fantastic company called Supreme Structures located in Fitchburg and learn the ins and outs of carpentry, project management, and true hard work. It's definitely worth the time to explore what's out there and the least that would happen is finding out what you like and don't like so in the future you can further make your decision on your life careers.
